Reading Counts

Reading Counts Information

What is Reading Counts?

Reading Counts is an independent reading program with a library of thousands of best-loved titles. Through Scholastic Reading Counts! we will be able to track what you’re reading independently.

How does it work?

  1. Choose a book to read.
  2. Complete an “I’m Ready for a Reading Counts Quiz!” form
  3. Take a short multiple-choice quiz about the book.
  4. Receive instant feedback.

How do I know if a book has a Reading Counts Quiz?

Use the website https://readingcountsbookexpert.tgds.hmhco.com/bookexpert/ to see if the book you’re reading qualifies for a Reading Counts quiz.

What are the expectations?

2nd Quarter: Read 1 book

  • Book 1 Deadline: November 30th
  • Pass the quiz with a 70% or better. **All quizzes must be taken in class.**

What qualifies as a Reading Counts book?

  • Quiz available
  • 150 pages or more (or less depending on the book; just ask!)
  • For 2nd quarter: Books with more text than pictures
  • You can find all of that information when you search for the book on the Reading Counts Quick Find at the link above.

Is this for a grade?

Yes. It will be entered as a grade in the grade book.

What if I make below a 70%?

You can read another qualifying book and can take a test on it. If you score higher, your test score for that will replace your lower test score.

Can I use a book I read in another grade?

No, this needs to be a book you are currently reading.

Can I use a book I’m reading in another class or at home?

Yes, you may use a book you’re reading outside of class or in another teacher’s class. It must still meet all of the qualifications above.
